Introduction & Purpose: This page is provided so interested poets may receive more information about poetry readings, poetry societies or poetry writing groups in areas of the state of Texas. Many groups have competitions whose due date may have passed by the time you read this listing. Contact individuals listed for more information. Contact Current Events Manager at Sol.Events@prodigy.net only with new events, updates, to remove old listings, or to send us information about your poetry writing group, poetry club, or poetry workshops. Include location, regular meeting dates, time, address, contact name and phone number. Include e-mail address and website information if you wish. We will not visit web pages looking for events because of the immense time  required. This page is typically updated 2-5 times a month.

Some venues have no events listed because they either don't get us the information or just don't have any current events scheduled.  If they remain empty, we will eventually purge them from this list.  Some may only have an event once a year.

Attn Firefox users: If you have visited this page recently, always do a frame reload (right click in an open area, select  "This frame" then "Reload frame") to make sure the latest page is loaded into the cache. Doing F5, ctrl-F5, or page reload button will not reload this page if it is being viewed as a frame. This continues to be a major deficiency in Firefox's refresh logic.

The links below will usually take you elsewhere on this page for more information, and that may in turn provide a link to an external page.
Recent updates/additions & upcoming events --  Click on dates below for more information. More recurring events with no featured speakers can be found in the "by city" listing.

Events which are weekly or twice a month will no longer be listed in the Recent updates and upcoming events; however they will continue to appear in the listings further down the page.  Competition entry deadlines are shown in italics.

FRANCESCA & ALINA ALAMO

SHARING POETRY

August 8, 2009

What a fascinating reading this will be.  Mother and daughter doing a poetic duet as they present poems each have written.

Francesca is only 16 years old and a high school student, but she writes with the wisdom and insight of someone much older. A member of Poets Northwest since 2004, she has already been published in multiple anthologies and won several poetry awards.  She was the featured poet at First Friday Poetry Reading Series in 2008 and has published her own chapbook titled "House of Wonder."

Francesca's mother, Alina Alamo, joined Poets Northwest in 2004 also to help strengthen her daughter's poetic abilities. She has worked for Hewlett Packard for almost 20 years and is a native of Venezuela. Married to Juan Alamo for 30 years, she has 2 daughters, Francesca and Isabel.  Although she doesn't write often, she is very fond of reading beautiful poetry.  She is Correspondence Secretary for Poets Northwest and has been a big asset to this Chapter.

There will be a Read-A-Round after the program and members and visitors are invited to share their poems.

Poets Northwest meets on the 2nd Sat. of each month from 10:00 a. m. to 12:00 noon at Barnes & Noble at Champions Forest Dr. & FM 1960 in Houston.  For info. call Kitty Mobley, Pres., at 281-259-7755, bobkat3442@sbcglobal.net or Claire Ottenstein-Ross, Vice Pres./Programs at 281-252-6434, claireandtom@sbcglobal.net.

Langdon Weekend

September 9-12, 2009, Granbury, Texas

http://www.tarleton.edu/~langdonreview/

It’s time to organize the program of our September conference in Granbury, Texas.  Last year’s meeting was so memorable and full of treats and treasures, including a screening of Amy Talkington’s film, The Night of the White Pants, and John Phillip Santos’s reading at the Saturday Brunch. And we had so many fantastic panel and personal presentations! In that spirit, we are asking for proposals for sessions and individual presentations for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday (Sept. 9-11, 2009), as part of this year’s Langdon Weekend, which celebrates the newest release of the Langdon Review of the Arts in Texas and brings together writers and artists from across the state.

We’re interested in poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, tips on publishing, presentations on music, film, television, nature. You name it, and we will have it.  We are very pleased to announce that this year’s Brunch Speaker is the celebrated and award-winning poet, playwright, essayist, children’s writer, novelist, and editor, Naomi Shihab Nye. We are very excited that she is coming up from San Antonio to share her wit, wisdom, and voice with us.

Also, this year, the film that we are screening on Friday night, September 11 is David Lowery’s film, St. Nick.  And two other treats: Jessica Quazi will be performing her music at the Brunch, and Steven McGaw’s acting troupe will be performing at the Weekend for a second year in a row!

If you have something to share and you would like to be considered to read, please send your proposal or abstract, attn: Moumin Quazi, to langdon@tarleton.edu or call 254.968.9283 or 254.968.9281.  Also, if you know of anyone else in your circle or department who might be interested, please spread the word and pass this message on.  See the Langdon website for past schedules and presentations at http:www.tarleton.edu/~langdonreview/
